What is Fascia? Dr. Bryan Geier
Dr. Geier’s approach to permanent postural changes and pain management lies in the understanding of the body’s connective tissue layer. When we all think of our muscles, most of us envision red muscles full of oxygen that can easily lengthen and contract. When we stretch we think the muscles actually lengthen and can stay that way throughout the workout, and if we stretch often enough we can get permanent lengthened muscles. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that just isn’t true. Stretching is actually obsolete unless you hold every position for 3 minutes or longer… but who is actually going to do that? I know I’m not, it’s too painful and time consuming.
The real truth is that our muscles are covered in Fascia.
Fascia is a tough connective tissue that spreads throughout the body in a three-dimensional web from head to foot functionally without interruption. The fascia surrounds and infuses with every organ, muscle, bone, nerve and blood vessel all the way down to the cellular level. Fascial strains can slowly tighten and cause the body to lose its physiologic adaptive capacity.
Over time, the tightness spreads like the pull in a sweater. Unfortunately, fascia, an elastocollagenous complex, can become solidified and shortened by trauma, inflammation and chronic poor posture (***Yes this includes working out*** Every time you are sore after a workout, Fascia is growing and tightening the muscles).
Fascial restriction can create abnormal strain patterns that can pull the bony structures out of proper alignment or too close together, resulting in compression of the facet joints or disc, producing pain and/or dysfunction.
For this reason, Dr. Geier works on the fascia and the bones because if he only adjusted the spine, like so many chiropractors do, the fascia is as strong as hard plastic and can quickly move out of alignment (within 20 minutes after an adjustment).
Shortened muscles contain lactic acid build up, toxins, and reduced blood flow. All of which hinder proper function of the muscle. This results in shortened, tight muscle and dull, achy referred pain.

The x’s represent where thre is fascial tension aka trigger points. The red is where you actually feel pain. It’s interesting how the site of pain is no where near the actual CAUSE of the pain.
Even though chiropractors are known to focus primarily on the spine, Dr. Geier is certified in physiotherapy and can effectively help almost any part of the body. Most chronic pain and injuries of the body are due to scar tissue or fascia that builds up compressing structures that cause pain.
