Strength Training After 40 in Scottsdale: Get Strong, Lean & Mobile
I'm 43 years old as I write this.
I've been training for most of my life and coaching people for decades.
And my approach to fitness today isn't exactly the same as it was when I was 23.
Not because I believe getting older means becoming weak and fragile.
Quite the opposite.
I plan on being strong, lean, athletic and doing cool stuff for as long as humanly possible.
But I've learned that longevity requires training intelligently.
And that's exactly what we try to teach the busy adults who train with us at Jeremy Scott Fitness in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Your Goal After 40 Shouldn't Just Be Losing Weight
Can fat loss be a goal?
Absolutely.
But I want you thinking bigger than the number on the scale.
I want you building muscle.
Getting stronger.
Improving your conditioning.
Moving better.
Having more energy.
Being able to play with your kids.
Travel.
Hike.
Golf.
Run.
Lift.
Do whatever cool stuff matters to you.
Fitness should increase what you're capable of doing with your life.
Strength Becomes Even More Important
I believe strength training should be the foundation for most adults.
We squat.
Hinge.
Push.
Pull.
Carry.
Lunge.
Those basic patterns don't need to disappear because you turned 40.
The exercises might change based on your body, experience and training history.
The loads might change.
Volume might change.
Recovery becomes something you pay more attention to.
But getting stronger still matters.
You Need Muscle
One of my biggest goals as I age is maintaining muscle and strength.
And I want the same thing for our members.
That doesn't mean you have to become a bodybuilder.
It means maintaining enough lean muscle and physical strength to remain capable as the years go by.
Strength is an investment in your future self.
Mobility Isn't Optional
This is something I personally care more about today than I did 20 years ago.
I want usable strength.
I want hips that move.
I want ankles that move.
I want shoulders that function.
I want to be able to get down on the floor, play with my kid, train hard and get back up without feeling like the Tin Man.
That's why mobility work is consistently part of my own routine.
You don't need to spend an hour stretching every day.
A few minutes consistently performed can go a long way.
Conditioning Still Matters
Strength training doesn't mean ignoring your heart and lungs.
I still love conditioning.
SkiErg.
Bike.
Rowing.
Sled work.
Carries.
Walking.
Short conditioning circuits.
You can build a great engine without beating yourself into the ground every day.
The key is using the right amount for your goals and recovery.
Stop Training Like You're Punishing Yourself
Hard training is good.
I'm a fan.
But there's a difference between training hard and training stupid.
More isn't always better.
Being sore for four days isn't the goal.
Throwing up after every workout isn't the goal.
The goal is creating enough training stress to improve and then recovering so you can come back and do it again.
That's how you stack months.
Then years.
Then decades.
You Don't Need an Hour Every Day
This is huge for our clients.
Most adults aren't failing because they don't care about their health.
They're failing because the plan they're trying to follow doesn't fit their life.
That's why our group workouts at Jeremy Scott Fitness are typically around 30 minutes.
Thirty focused minutes.
Strength.
Conditioning.
Movement.
Coaching.
Then you're back to your life.
That's a system a busy parent or professional can realistically follow.
What I Personally Prioritize After 40
My training isn't about proving how tough I am anymore.
I want to perform.
I still challenge myself.
I still chase goals.
But I'm always looking at the bigger picture.
I prioritize:
Strength.
Muscle.
Cardiovascular fitness.
Mobility.
Body composition.
Recovery.
And consistency.
I want to look good with my shirt off today.
But I also want to be the dad who can run, lift, play and keep up years from now.
You can care about both.
Fitness After 40 Isn't About Doing Less
It's about doing what matters.
Get strong.
Maintain muscle.
Keep your heart healthy.
Move your body.
Eat like an adult most of the time.
Sleep.
Recover.
Stay consistent.
None of this is sexy.
It just works.
