If I Had To Start Over At 42, Here's Exactly What I'd Do
Every now and then I like to ask myself a simple question.
If I lost everything I have learned over the last 20 years and had to start over today at 42 years old, what would I actually do?
Not what sounds good on social media.
Not what gets clicks.
Not what is trending.
What would I do if my goal was to build a healthy body, a successful business, meaningful relationships, and a life I was proud of?
After thinking about it, the answer was surprisingly simple.
Most adults do not need more information.
They need more focus on the fundamentals.
Here is exactly where I would start.
Fitness
1. Lift Weights Three To Four Days Per Week
I would stop chasing the perfect program.
I would focus on getting stronger on the basic movements and building muscle consistently over time.
Muscle improves nearly every aspect of health as we age. It supports metabolism, strength, confidence, resilience, and long-term independence.
2. Walk Every Day
If I could recommend one habit to almost every adult, it would be walking.
Walking improves recovery, burns calories, supports heart health, reduces stress, and helps maintain a healthy body composition.
The return on investment is hard to beat.
3. Prioritize Muscle Over Weight Loss
Most adults spend too much time trying to lose weight and not enough time trying to build muscle.
The goal is not simply to weigh less.
The goal is to become stronger, healthier, and more capable.
4. Spend Ten Minutes Per Day On Mobility
Mobility does not need to be complicated.
Ten focused minutes per day can dramatically improve how you move and feel.
The goal is to maintain the ability to do the things you love for decades to come.
5. Stop Trying To Win Every Workout
Some days are for pushing hard.
Some days are for maintaining.
The goal is consistency, not destruction.
Nutrition
1. Hit Protein Every Day
If I could only focus on one nutrition habit, this would be it.
Protein helps preserve muscle, supports recovery, increases satiety, and makes body composition goals easier to achieve.
2. Simplify Your Meals
Most adults make nutrition harder than it needs to be.
A handful of simple meals repeated consistently often produces better results than constantly searching for the next diet.
3. Stop Drinking Calories
Sugary drinks, specialty coffees, juices, and alcohol can quietly add hundreds of calories to your day.
Many people would see significant progress simply by reducing liquid calories.
4. Make Healthy Choices Easy
Environment often beats willpower.
Keep healthy foods visible and accessible.
Make the right choice the easiest choice.
5. Focus On Consistency
Perfect nutrition does not exist.
The adults who get the best results are usually the ones who stay consistent long enough to see them.
Business
1. Build Trust First
Most people try to sell before they have earned attention.
Provide value first.
Help people solve problems.
Trust creates opportunities.
2. Create Content Consistently
Content allows you to help people at scale.
It is one of the most effective ways to build relationships, establish credibility, and grow a business.
3. Keep Overhead Low
Flexibility creates freedom.
The less financial pressure your business has, the more strategic your decisions can become.
4. Own Your Audience
Social media is valuable, but it is rented land.
Build an email list.
Create a community.
Develop direct relationships with the people you serve.
5. Play The Long Game
Most people quit too soon.
Business success often comes from showing up consistently long after others stop.
Relationships
1. Be Present
The people you care about do not need more things.
They need your attention.
Being fully present is one of the greatest gifts you can give.
2. Put The Phone Away
Many of life's best moments happen when nobody is documenting them.
Be where your feet are.
3. Tell People What They Mean To You
Do not assume people know.
Say it.
Express appreciation while you have the opportunity.
4. Protect Your Inner Circle
Your time and energy are limited.
Invest them in relationships that truly matter.
5. Remember What Matters Most
One day the workouts end.
The business slows down.
The goals change.
What remains are the people you shared your life with.
Never lose sight of that.
Final Thoughts
If I had to start over at 42, I would not look for shortcuts.
I would focus on building muscle, walking daily, eating simple, serving people, creating value, and being present with the people I love.
The fundamentals are rarely flashy.
They are simply effective.
And when practiced consistently over time, they have the power to transform every area of your life.
