Ep 716: Almost 20 Years Together: Marriage, Parenthood & What’s Next

What does it take to build a life together over nearly two decades?

Relationships evolve. Families grow. Priorities change. The people we were when we first started building a life together aren't necessarily the same people we become along the way.

In this episode of the Jeremy Scott Fitness podcast, we explore the themes of long-term relationships, marriage, parenthood and the question of what comes next. It's an opportunity to reflect on the experiences that shape us, the importance of family and how we approach the next chapter of life.

Because building a life together isn't just about how far you've come. It's also about how you continue to grow.

Marriage After Nearly 20 Years: Growing Together Through Change

A long-term relationship is built over time, through shared experiences, changing circumstances and the everyday decisions that shape a life together.

The early stages of a relationship can look very different from life years later. Responsibilities evolve, careers change, children may enter the picture, and the demands of everyday life can become more complicated.

The challenge is learning how to navigate those changes while continuing to build a meaningful life together.

Long-term relationships aren't defined by staying exactly the same. They're shaped by how two people adapt, communicate and continue moving forward through different seasons of life.

Nearly 20 years together provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on that journey and consider what matters most in the years ahead.

Parenthood and the Changing Priorities of Family Life

Parenthood can change nearly every aspect of daily life, from schedules and responsibilities to the way we think about our time, energy and future.

Raising a family requires constant adjustment. There are competing demands, unexpected challenges and countless decisions that influence the household as a whole.

It's easy to become consumed by the logistics of everyday life. Work needs attention. Children need support. Household responsibilities don't disappear. Personal goals can end up on the back burner.

That makes it especially important to step back occasionally and consider the bigger picture.

What kind of family life are you trying to create? What do you want your children to learn from watching you? How do you make room for your relationship while meeting the demands of parenthood?

There isn't one universal answer. Every family has its own circumstances, priorities and challenges. But making time to think about these questions can help ensure that you're living intentionally rather than simply reacting to whatever the day brings.

Balancing Marriage, Family and Personal Goals

One of the challenges of adult life is balancing the different roles we occupy.

You may be a spouse, a parent, a business owner, a professional, a friend and someone with personal goals that still matter.

Those responsibilities can compete for the same limited resource: time.

The solution isn't necessarily to do more. Sometimes it's to get clearer about what deserves your attention and what can wait.

A few principles can help:

  • Be intentional with your time. Identify the people and priorities that deserve your best attention, not just whatever time remains at the end of the day.

  • Keep communicating. Life changes, and expectations may need to change with it. Make room for honest conversations about responsibilities, goals and what each person needs.

  • Protect your health. Physical and mental well-being influence how you show up for your family, your work and yourself.

  • Make room for individual growth. A strong family life doesn't mean giving up every personal ambition. It means finding ways to pursue meaningful goals while respecting shared responsibilities.

  • Revisit your priorities. What worked five or ten years ago may not be the right approach today.

Balance doesn't mean every part of life receives equal attention every day. It means making thoughtful decisions about where your energy goes over time.

Why Personal Growth Still Matters in Long-Term Relationships

Nearly two decades together can bring a tremendous amount of change, both individually and as a couple.

Personal growth doesn't stop when you establish a career, get married or become a parent. If anything, the responsibilities of adulthood can make continued growth even more important.

That growth can take many forms: improving communication, developing healthier habits, becoming more patient, setting better boundaries or reconsidering what success means to you.

It can also mean recognizing that your goals and perspectives may change as you move through different stages of life.

The key is to remain open to learning and adapting.

A long-term relationship is shared, but each person is also an individual who continues to develop. Making space for both can help create a life that feels purposeful rather than simply routine.

What Comes Next? Looking Ahead to the Next Chapter

It's easy to spend so much time managing the present that you rarely stop to think about the future.

But different stages of life invite different questions.

What do you want the next five, ten or twenty years to look like? What kind of health do you want to maintain as you age? What experiences do you want to share with your family? What goals have you put aside that deserve another look?

Thinking about the future doesn't mean being dissatisfied with the present. It means recognizing that the choices you make today help shape the opportunities you'll have tomorrow.

This applies to relationships, parenting, financial decisions, physical health and personal fulfillment.

You don't need to have every answer. You simply need to be willing to ask the questions and make adjustments as life unfolds.

Health, Fitness and Showing Up for the People Who Matter

At Jeremy Scott Fitness, we talk a lot about strength, fitness, longevity and staying capable as we get older. Those goals matter for more than how you look in the mirror.

Taking care of your health can help you remain active, participate in the experiences you enjoy and keep doing the things that matter to you.

For busy adults and parents, the challenge is often finding a sustainable approach to fitness that works alongside real-life responsibilities.

That means building habits you can maintain, prioritizing strength training, staying active, improving mobility and making recovery part of the process.

You don't have to choose between taking care of yourself and caring about your family. Your own well-being is one part of building a healthy, active life for the long term.

The goal isn't perfection. It's to keep investing in your health so you can continue showing up for the people and experiences that matter most.
