Ep 706: My Supplement Stack: What Actually Works & What I'd Buy With Only $100
Walk into any supplement store or spend five minutes scrolling through social media and you'll quickly find hundreds of products promising better workouts, more muscle, faster fat loss, improved recovery, more energy, better sleep, and even a longer life.
The problem?
Most people don't need most of them.
Supplement marketing can make fitness and nutrition unnecessarily complicated. There is always a new product, new ingredient, new "must-have" supplement, or new formula claiming to be the secret to better results.
But what actually works?
And more importantly, what is actually worth spending your money on?
In this episode of the Jeremy Scott Fitness Podcast, Jeremy Scott breaks down his personal supplement philosophy, what supplements he believes are actually worth considering, and what he would prioritize if he had only $100 to spend on supplements.
The goal isn't to build the biggest supplement cabinet.
It's to get the most results from the few things that actually matter.
Do You Really Need Supplements?
The word "supplement" is important.
Supplements are supposed to supplement a good diet, not replace one.
If your nutrition, training, sleep, hydration, and daily activity aren't in place, adding another supplement isn't going to magically fix the problem.
Think of supplements as the final layer of your health and fitness strategy.
Your foundation should still include:
Consistent strength training
Adequate protein
A nutrient-dense diet
Quality sleep
Regular movement
Proper hydration
Managing stress
Consistency over time
Once those pieces are in place, supplements can potentially help fill specific gaps and support specific goals.
The Biggest Problem With Supplement Shopping
The supplement industry is massive.
And that means there is plenty of money to be made convincing people that they need more.
You don't need 15 different products sitting on your kitchen counter every morning.
You need to understand what you're taking, why you're taking it, and whether it has enough evidence behind it to justify the cost.
That's the approach Jeremy takes in this episode.
Instead of asking:
"What's the newest supplement?"
Ask:
"Does this supplement actually help me accomplish my goal?"
That's a much better question.
What Makes a Supplement Worth Buying?
Before spending money on a supplement, consider four things:
1. Does It Actually Work?
Look for evidence, not just testimonials, influencers, or impressive marketing claims.
2. Does It Fit Your Goal?
A supplement designed for athletic performance may not be necessary for someone whose primary goal is general health.
3. Is the Dose Meaningful?
A product can contain an impressive list of ingredients but still provide amounts that aren't particularly useful.
4. Is It Worth the Cost?
Even an effective supplement may not be worth buying if there is a less expensive way to accomplish the same thing.
My $100 Supplement Challenge
If you only had $100 to spend on supplements, where would you put your money?
That's the question Jeremy tackles in this episode.
Instead of buying everything that looks appealing, the goal is to prioritize the supplements that provide the most potential benefit for the money.
That means focusing on fundamentals rather than hype.
A smart supplement budget should be about value, effectiveness, and consistency.
Not having the biggest collection of products.
Supplements vs. Real Food
Another important distinction is understanding what supplements can't do.
Protein powder, for example, can be a convenient way to help you reach your protein target.
But it doesn't make chicken, eggs, Greek yogurt, fish, lean beef, vegetables, fruit, and other whole foods irrelevant.
Likewise, a supplement shouldn't become an excuse to ignore the basics.
Food first. Supplements second.
That's a much more sustainable approach to nutrition.
Don't Let Supplements Become Complicated
One of the biggest advantages of having a simple supplement routine is consistency.
If your routine requires taking 12 different products at five different times throughout the day, you're eventually going to get tired of it.
A simple routine that you consistently follow will generally be much more useful than a complicated routine you abandon after two weeks.
The best supplement stack isn't necessarily the biggest one.
It's the one you can actually stick with.
What About Supplements for Men Over 40?
As you get older, the goal of supplementation may shift.
Instead of simply asking:
"What will help me build the most muscle?"
You may also start asking:
How can I support healthy aging?
How can I maintain muscle?
How can I support recovery?
How can I continue training consistently?
How can I support my overall health?
What supplements are actually worth the money?
These are important questions for anyone, but particularly for adults who want to stay strong and capable as they age.
Don't Confuse Supplements With Results
Here's the uncomfortable truth:
Your supplement stack isn't going to compensate for inconsistent training.
It isn't going to fix poor nutrition.
It isn't going to replace sleep.
And it certainly isn't going to make up for a lack of consistency.
Supplements can be useful tools.
But they're still just tools.
Your results will continue to come primarily from the fundamentals you practice week after week, month after month, and year after year.
The Best Supplement Stack Is the One That Fits You
There isn't one perfect supplement stack for everyone.
Your needs depend on your:
Goals
Diet
Training
Lifestyle
Budget
Preferences
Individual circumstances
That's why blindly copying someone else's supplement routine isn't necessarily the best approach.
Instead, understand why you're taking something.
Then decide whether it deserves a place in your routine.
You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars every month on supplements to make progress
You don't need the newest product.
You don't need a cabinet full of powders, pills, gummies, and capsules.
You need to identify what actually provides value and prioritize those things.
If you only had $100 to spend, how would you spend it?
That's exactly the question Jeremy tackles in this episode.
The goal isn't to take more supplements.
It's to spend your money smarter and focus on what actually works.
