Ep 707: 7 Habits Keeping You Fat After 40
Why Losing Weight Gets Harder & What to Do
If you're over 40 and struggling to lose weight, you're not alone.
Maybe you've noticed that the things that worked in your 20s and 30s don't seem to work anymore.
You eat "pretty healthy."
You exercise.
You try to cut back.
You start a new diet.
You lose a few pounds.
Then life gets busy, the weight comes back, and you're right where you started.
So what's going on?
Getting older can come with changes in your lifestyle, activity levels, recovery, muscle mass, sleep, stress, and eating habits. But one of the biggest mistakes is assuming that getting older automatically means you're destined to gain weight.
It doesn't.
In this episode of the Jeremy Scott Fitness Podcast, Jeremy Scott takes a closer look at seven habits that may be keeping you stuck and preventing you from getting leaner and healthier after 40.
The good news?
Habits can change.
Why Is Losing Weight After 40 So Difficult?
One of the most common questions adults ask is:
"Why can't I lose weight like I used to?"
The answer isn't always a slower metabolism.
Your life may simply be different.
You may have:
More responsibilities
Less free time
A more sedentary job
Less spontaneous activity
More stress
Less sleep
More meals eaten on the go
Less time available for structured exercise
At the same time, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important as you age.
That's why the answer isn't simply "eat less and do more cardio."
You need a strategy that works with your current life.
Habit #1: Waiting for Motivation
One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting until they feel motivated to work out or eat better.
Motivation is unreliable.
Some days you'll have it.
Some days you won't.
The people who consistently make progress aren't necessarily more motivated. They have systems and routines that make healthy choices easier to repeat.
Instead of asking:
"Do I feel like working out today?"
Ask:
"What does my schedule say?"
Consistency beats motivation.
Habit #2: Trying to Exercise Your Way Out of a Poor Diet
Exercise is incredibly important.
But it's easy to overestimate how much activity can compensate for consistently overeating.
You can spend an hour working out and then unintentionally consume hundreds or thousands of additional calories throughout the day.
That doesn't mean you need to obsess over calories.
It means your nutrition matters.
Prioritize:
Protein
Fruits and vegetables
Whole foods
High-fiber foods
Reasonable portions
Mostly minimally processed foods
Your workouts and nutrition should work together not against each other.
Habit #3: Doing Too Much Cardio and Not Enough Strength Training
If your primary goal is to look and feel better after 40, don't overlook strength training.
Building and maintaining muscle is one of the most important things you can do as you age.
Strength training can help you:
Build muscle
Maintain strength
Improve physical function
Support bone health
Improve body composition
Stay capable and independent
You don't need to spend hours lifting weights.
A well-designed strength training program can be remarkably efficient.
Habit #4: Being Active Only During Your Workout
Here's a simple question:
What do you do for the other 23 hours of the day?
A 45-minute workout is fantastic.
But if you spend the rest of your day sitting at a desk, sitting in the car, and sitting on the couch, your overall activity level may still be low.
That's why daily movement matters.
Walk more.
Take the stairs.
Park farther away.
Get outside.
Take walking meetings.
Play with your kids.
The goal isn't necessarily to turn every moment into exercise.
It's to stop being sedentary all day.
Habit #5: Ignoring Sleep
Sleep is often the first thing busy adults sacrifice.
Work gets busy.
Kids need something.
Your phone keeps you up.
You stay up late trying to get one more thing done.
Then you wake up tired and wonder why you're struggling with energy, hunger, cravings, and motivation.
Sleep should be treated as part of your fitness program—not something that happens after everything else is finished.
Prioritize a consistent sleep schedule and create an environment that makes quality sleep easier.
Habit #6: Trying to Be Perfect
Another common fat-loss mistake is believing that you need to eat perfectly to get results.
You don't.
A healthy lifestyle needs to be sustainable.
There will be:
Birthdays
Vacations
Restaurants
Holidays
Business dinners
Family celebrations
One meal doesn't make you gain significant body fat.
Just like one workout doesn't transform your body.
Your results come from what you do most of the time.
Learn to get back on track instead of constantly starting over.
Habit #7: Having No Plan
Perhaps the biggest habit keeping people stuck is simply winging it.
You decide you'll "eat better."
You'll "work out more."
You'll "try to lose some weight."
But without a specific plan, life usually wins.
A better approach is to decide in advance:
When will I train?
What workouts will I do?
What will I eat?
How much will I move?
When will I go to bed?
The fewer decisions you have to make in the moment, the easier it becomes to stay consistent.
What Actually Works for Fat Loss After 40?
Forget complicated diets and extreme workout programs.
Start with the fundamentals:
Strength Train
Build and maintain muscle with consistent resistance training.
Eat Enough Protein
Protein can help support muscle maintenance and recovery while making meals more satisfying.
Move Every Day
Don't rely exclusively on your workouts for physical activity.
Prioritize Sleep
Recovery matters just as much as training.
Manage Stress
You don't need to eliminate stress, but finding better ways to manage it can make healthy habits easier to maintain.
Stay Consistent
The goal isn't to be perfect for two weeks.
It's to build habits you can maintain for years.
You Don't Need to Be 25 Again
One of the biggest mindset shifts after 40 is realizing that your goal doesn't need to be becoming your 25-year-old self again.
Maybe your priorities have changed.
You might care more about:
Having energy
Building strength
Staying lean
Playing with your kids
Avoiding injuries
Feeling confident
Maintaining independence
Living a long, healthy life
That's not settling.
That's growing up.
Fitness after 40 should be about becoming more capable, not chasing your past.
The Bottom Line
If you're struggling to lose weight after 40, don't immediately blame your age or metabolism.
Look at your habits.
Are you moving enough?
Are you strength training?
Are you eating enough protein?
Are you sleeping?
Are you constantly starting over?
Are you relying on motivation instead of a plan?
Small changes to those daily behaviors can add up to significant improvements over time.
You don't need another extreme diet.
You need a sustainable strategy.
